Hallton Mills has a rich history spanning 270 years, having originally operated as a cotton factory and later a military factory. In 2012, the Lancaster Cohousing Group purchased the mill and surrounding area, transforming it into an eco-community built to PassivHaus standards. The mill will undergo refurbishment with a focus on cost-efficiency, with plans to rent out the space as personal studios for local artists. A new industrial-style reception area and multifunctional room have been designed to honor the mill's history while infusing it with new life.
In an effort to be more environmentally friendly and cost-effective, much of the furniture is uniquely crafted from materials upcycled from the site. These include discarded wooden boards, large cable reels, and pallet boards. A sitting area, subtly integrated into the communal space, serves as a flexible zone that can be transformed into a small theatre, art gallery, or activity room.
